Workplace Investigations & Discovery Reviews:
What to Expect

What Employers Should Know

When a workplace concern is raised, employers in Alberta must respond promptly, fairly, and consistently. While some matters can be addressed internally, others require an independent workplace investigation, especially when allegations are serious, sensitive, or involve leadership.

Tenfold HR Solutions provides independent workplace investigations in Alberta, including Edmonton and Calgary. If it is unclear whether a formal investigation is required, we may begin with a discovery review to determine the appropriate next step.

Discovery Review or Formal Investigation?

The starting point depends on what is known.

A discovery review is used when the situation needs clarification. It may include an intake discussion, a complainant interview, and a limited document review.

The goal is to assess scope and determine whether a formal workplace investigation is necessary.

If a formal complaint is already clear, we move directly into investigation planning. Before interviews begin, we confirm scope, identify involved parties, and provide an estimate range.

What to Expect from the Process

Most workplace investigations follow a structured approach:

  • Phase 1: Discovery review and intake, or investigation planning
  • Phase 2: Interview with the complainant(s)
  • Phase 3: Interviews with witnesses
  • Phase 4: Interview with the respondent(s)
  • Phase 5: Documentation review, analysis, and report preparation
  • Phase 6: Report delivery and findings meeting

Workplace investigations often involve multiple individuals, and interviews may be added if additional relevant information emerges. Our focus throughout is to maintain procedural fairness, confidentiality, and a complete fact finding process.

Independent Investigator and HR Advisory Support

Tenfold’s investigator role is strictly neutral and focused on fact-finding.

If you require support after findings are delivered, our HR Advisory Services can assist with documentation, planning, and implementation. To protect neutrality, advisory support is provided by a separate team member.
