Workplace Culture: The Evolution of Tenfold HR’s Think Tank Thursdays

Building Workplace Culture

Creating a strong workplace culture doesn’t happen overnight. It evolves through intentional moments of connection, collaboration, and shared team experiences.

At Tenfold HR Solutions, building a positive workplace culture has always been a priority. What started as a way to stay connected during the uncertainty of COVID-19 where we had to work from home and created a hybrid model. The need to create meaningful events for our team has grown into a series of traditions that strengthen our team and reinforce our values.

Where It Started: Connection During COVID-19

Like many organizations, Tenfold shifted to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the team remained productive, something important was missing: the everyday connections that naturally happen when people share a workplace.

One of the first ways we encouraged regular communication was through a TEAMS channel called our “Water Cooler,” a place where, daily, our team connects on the random everyday things, people would say around a regular office environment, around the water cooler.

To keep our team connected, we introduced fun team events, and we called them Think Tank Thursdays (TTT). These touchpoints were intentionally non-work-related. The goal was simple: create space for our team to connect, relax, and enjoy time together even while working remotely.

Some of our earliest activities included a virtual pumpkin-carving event during Halloween. Pumpkins were delivered to team members’ homes so everyone could carve together online. Others were trivia or games, and just general get-to-know-you type themed events. What began as a one-time activity quickly became a tradition of creating shared experiences to bring our team together.

Bringing the Tradition Into the Office

When our team returned to the office, the initiative evolved. Instead of one person leading it, the team took ownership, with a different team member choosing the activity, transforming TTT into a regular event.

The goal remained the same: create time for connection outside of daily work responsibilities. Team members who couldn’t attend in person could still join online, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to participate.

Over time, the activities grew to include interactive team-building sessions:

  • Movie nights
  • Craft activities
  • Team Olympics
  • DISC personality assessments
  • And much more.

These events helped strengthen relationships across the team and encouraged collaboration in a relaxed environment.

Thrive Thursdays: Giving Back to the Community

As Tenfold continued to grow, our team culture expanded beyond internal connection to include community impact. Today, our Think Tank Thursdays have evolved into Thrive Thursdays. Once each quarter, our team steps outside the office to give back to the community.

Our first Thrive Thursday was spent volunteering at the Edmonton Food Bank, where we helped assemble food hampers and saw firsthand the incredible work being done to support families across Edmonton. This initiative reflects something important to our team: workplace culture is not only about internal connection, but also about contributing to the communities we serve.

Everyday Culture at Tenfold

Beyond our team building events, we encourage smaller moments of connection throughout the year. Team favourites like walking challenges using a ‘StepUp’ app and our weekly Tuesday Trivia Contests with Think Trivia Inc. help keep our culture active and fun.

Moreover, we recognize milestones and birthdays, share peer shout-outs, and build connection through team check-ins, onboarding coffee chats, and employee-led initiatives like our Book Club, Finer Things Club, and shared Teams channels.

Lastly, we also take time to recognize the people who make Tenfold what it is. Each year, we host an Employee Appreciation Event in March and our summer BBQ, to celebrate our team and their contributions. We also come together for our Annual Holiday Party, along with other smaller celebrations throughout the year.

Celebrating Our Team

Importantly, all events are optional but encouraged. We want team members to feel welcome to participate without pressure, recognizing that everyone has different schedules and priorities.

Workplace culture isn’t created through one initiative or event. It grows through consistent effort, meaningful connection, and opportunities for people to engage in ways that feel authentic.

From Think Tank Thursdays during the pandemic to Thrive Thursdays in our community today, Tenfold’s culture continues to evolve as our team grows.
